Alternative Ed

Alternative Ed is an independent alternative rock band from the mountains of Preston County, West Virginia, blending grunge, punk, and alternative rock into music that is loud, raw, melodic, and unapologetically their own.

The band began through a connection between alternative education teachers and former students. That origin remains part of its story, while the current five-member lineup is taking the music into a heavier, more focused chapter.

Steve Martin – Lead Vocals, Rhythm Guitar
Gage Pifer – Lead Guitar
Bryan Raybuck – Bass
Jason Payne – Drums
Ashley Sphar – Vocals

Writing, recording, producing, mixing, and releasing their music independently, Alternative Ed has surpassed 130,000 streams and earned independent radio play, press, and playlist support in the U.S. and internationally. “Everything to Me” reached #1 on Spotify’s Progressive Rock Odyssey playlist.

Their songs explore relationships, frustration, isolation, and resilience—moving from vulnerable melodies to a wall of guitars without losing the human connection at their core.

The new single “Oblivion” arrives September 25, 2026, followed by “Ghosts” in October. Both lead toward Realitivity, planned for spring 2027, alongside new material including “Nothing for Free,” “Blanket on the Sun,” and the title track.

Five people. One band. From the mountains of West Virginia to wherever this thing takes us next.
