Alternative Ed
Alternative Ed is an independent alternative rock band hailing from the mountains of West Virginia, blending grunge, punk, and alternative rock into music that is loud, raw, melodic, and unapologetically their own.
The band began with an unlikely connection: alternative education teachers and former students making music together. What started as a creative outlet grew into something much bigger, built around the same idea they try to pass along to young people every day—that where you come from doesn’t have to determine where you can go.
Alternative Ed is:
Steve Martin – Lead Vocals, Rhythm Guitar
Gage Pifer – Lead Guitar
Bryan Raybuck – Bass
Ashley Sphar – Vocals
Writing, recording, producing, mixing, and releasing their music independently from West Virginia, Alternative Ed has steadily built an audience far beyond its Appalachian home. The band’s music has accumulated tens of thousands of streams, received radio play and international attention, and landed on playlists around the world. “That’s Life” has surpassed 17,000 streams, while “Everything to Me” reached #1 on Spotify’s Progressive Rock Odyssey playlist.
Alternative Ed’s music ranges from deeply personal songs to heavier explorations of frustration, isolation, relationships, and life in a region that has seen its share of struggle. That range is at the heart of the band: one song can be vulnerable and melodic, while the next can hit like a wall of guitars.
Now entering a new chapter, Alternative Ed is preparing the album Realitivity, a collection that pushes the band further into the raw, unpredictable alternative sound it has been developing. The upcoming single “Oblivion” arrives September 25, 2026, with songs including “Ghosts,” “Blanket on the Sun,” “Nothing for Free,” and the title track pointing toward what comes next.
Alternative Ed remains completely independent, ambitious, and rooted in West Virginia.
Four people. One band. From the mountains of West Virginia to wherever this thing takes us next.
