Alternative Ed started out as the brainchild of vocalist/guitarist/songwriter Stephen Martin. After publishing solo music for a few years, he got the urge to try and expand his project to include other musicians. Martin, an alternative education teacher in Kingwood, West Virginia reached out to one his former students, Gage Pifer, who was an accomplished guitarist. The two began working on and writing material together. A chance meeting in 2024 was the catalyst in the formation of the band. Martin's son is the bassist in a local band of teenagers called Salem. During one of Salem's shows, Martin met Chris Calvert, whose son is the guitarist in Salem. Martin learned that Calvert was also an alternative education teacher in a different county and was himself a musician. Martin pitched the idea of Alternative Ed to Calvert, who joined the project on bass. Now they just needed a drummer. In comes Landon Jaggers, whose sister plays drums in Salem. Martin and Calvert learned that Jaggers was a musician with Martin asking him, “what do you play?”, to which Jaggers replied “whatever you need!” This would solidify the lineup of Alternative Ed.
